Why can’t I write??
No matter how many times I hear this question, the answer is always the same. We write the way we speak. As someoe who has spent the past decade editing academic papers, working with small businesses and nonprofits, and working as a technical writer in corporate America, I can tell you the issue is the same. You have to train your brain to thinking analytically, grammatically and have a good grasp on vocabulary to write an effecitve paper. The rest, is learned — such as writing style, punctuation, and flow.
I am old enough to remember when we had vocbulary test in elementary and jr. high English classes every Friday. I also remember when we were required to learn the “art of writing”, which included grammar and writing skills. If you were born after 1990, chances are you did not learn this. You were expected to grasp it. Writing is in fact, an art. Like any skill, practice makes perfect.
Don’t allow anxeity to overtake your writing journey. Embrace what you do not know and find help. We are here, we have been where you are, and we can help you navigate style, grammar, vocbulary and ensure your paper, no matter how big or small, flows the way it should.
